My book ‘Fitness Food Made Simple’ was reviewed by Berita Harian in its Saturday paper over the weekend. The interview, which was done two weeks ago, took place at Coffee Bean in Sunway Pyramid i.e. during my family vacation there. Not only that, I also managed to squeeze in a photo-shooting session for a workout poster during the stay. It was all done in the ‘relaxing’ way and I enjoyed it very much. Now, I wish I could do this for the rest of my life, full time

The journalist, Fairuz, was very enthusiastic about the book and I thanked him for that. He’s such a professional person to work with, and we had great time sharing stories. I specifically mentioned during the interview that healthy cuisine is all about moderation. Moderation should be in the ingredients, but not in the flavor. This book contains recipes of a wide range of dishes to suit a healthy lifestyle whilst satisfying our appetite for great-tasting dishes. Mudah dan ringkas

Beliau berkata, adalah penting untuk meneliti kandungan pemakanan yang diambil bagi mengelak kesan jangka panjang pada tubuh badan. Ditambah lagi dengan pelbagai kandungan perisa makanan diragui, adalah lebih baik menyediakan sendiri resipi yang sihat untuk dimakan.
“Tidak semua resipi sukar untuk dibuat kerana pada zaman sekarang ini semuanya harus ringkas dan mudah. Namun, saya cuba mempelbagaikan resipi dengan mempraktikkan elemen kesihatan dalam penyediaan resipi masakan ringkas.
“Inilah yang terkandung dalam buku resipi Fitness Food Made Simple,” katanya kepada XY – Ikon Lelaki. Menyentuh mengenai idea penghasilan buku resipi itu, Ian berkata, beliau sering diminta untuk memberi pelbagai tip pemakanan sepanjang terbabit dalam dunia kecergasan. Dengan pengalaman menyediakan menu berasaskan makanan sihat, sajian berkhasiat menurutnya, amat mudah dihasilkan.
Berbeza dengan buku resipi biasa, resepi yang disyorkan dalam Fitness Food Made Simple seberapa mungkin mengelak pengambilan garam, gula dan serbuk perisa. Sebaliknya, Ian mengolah resipi baru yang lebih praktikal dan berkhasiat dari sudut kesihatan.
“Memanglah kalau berkait rapat dengan kesihatan, semuanya menjadi hambar termasuk makanan. Tetapi, apa yang saya buat ialah mempelbagaikan resipi baru yang boleh dipraktik secara mudah dan yang penting, ia tetap menyelerakan.
“Malah, sesetengah resipi itu cukup mudah dihasilkan dalam tempoh lima minit. Bukankah mudah untuk menyediakan menu sihat andai kita tahu cara yang betul,” katanya yang juga seorang jurutera sivil dan jurulatih kecergasan peribadi sambilan.
Mengulas lanjut mengenai buku resipi Fitness Food Made Simple, Ian berkata, lebih 40 resipi berkhasiat dan ringkas disediakan di mana ia dikategorikan kepada beberapa bahagian seperti menu sajian ala barat, aneka nasi dan sup, minuman, roti serta pencuci mulut.
Kata Ian, tabiat pemakanan tidak seharusnya disekat namun harus arif dalam soal penyediaan makanan untuk memastikan tahap kesihatan dijaga.
“Tidak mahulah nanti pelbagai masalah yang timbul apabila tua kerana tidak menjaga pemakanan. Sebab itu, dalam asyik kita bersenam, harus juga seimbangkan dengan pemakanan yang diambil. Bukan saja kadar gula dan garam pengambilan lemak, sumber berminyak juga harus diambil kira,” katanya.
Tunggu apa lagi, buku masakan Fitness Food Made Simple sesuai dipraktikkan sebagai gaya hidup baru untuk menjaga pemakanan. Harga pasaran buku ini ialah RM69.90 dan boleh didapati esklusif di MPH Mid Valley.

Behind-the-scene : Awani Pagi

Last Wednesday, I was invited again to appear on Awani Pagi, a morning talk-show with ever lovely Dangsuria and a very humble Zaiful. I arrived there very early to avoid having to go through the same bad experience as in my last show. I blogged about it here. Since both hosts were still live on-air when I arrived, I comforted myself at their pantry, where I met our internet millionaire, Irfan Khairi (IK). We talked briefly on our tv segments and blogs. IK, who is also a frequent guest at Astro, is also the host of an up-coming reality tv show, produced by Erma Fatima. Later , Zaiful came and joined me. We exchanged some notes on the topic that was about to be interviewed ‘How to shop for groceries healthily’.
We came live on air about 9.30am and the session lasted about 20minutes. I talked about how to read the nutritional labels behind the food packages. I also brought along with me some packaging samples like cereals, rice and bread – the basic food that can be found in everyone’s homes.
I am happy that it went well. Most of the infos that I intend to share did get across. However, I wish there was more time given as there were so many other things that can be shared with the viewers like how to shop for ‘fat’, how to shop for vegetables etc. There are so many ‘hidden’ truths that the food manufacturers are hiding on the packages. Well, I don’t really blame them entirely though as they are just trying to sell their products, and food needs to taste good. As consumers, we just have be aware of what we are putiing into our mouth. Often times, we are putting too much sugar and bad fat. What are the limits again?

meeting for a TV show

It’s always been a Fitness Trainer’s dream to have their own program or show that will be able to cater a wider audience. Be it a Workout Video, DVD, TV shows or their own fitness column in the magazine. I’ve been approached once before to have my own show targeting on fitness for kids. Frankly, I try to restrain myself from getting involved, not because I don’t enjoy it, but more of having limited spare time. See, I am still a full time engineer, and I work five days a week (plus I travel alot in my work). I only do PTs on alternate weekdays and over the weekends. Just like you, I do have a family and really enjoy spending my time with them. I love to hang out with wifey and munchkin, and we go for holidays whenever time permits. Nowadays, time is so scarce that I have to make sure that I’m making most out of it whenever I have free time.

Earlier this week, I found myself discussing with three great ladies over a dinner appointment at Bun Bun Restaurant in Taman Desa KL. An invitation to be part of this TV Fitness show by Shantini, a great writer and translator for several Ministries and Production Houses, is hard to decline as I know I will be in good hands. She’s in the midst of coming up with a Program Proposal for a 13-episode Fitness/Health show for TV. That is where she wants me to come in as a host, with another hosting partner, Pui See (or Cy) also another great lady and a full-time fitness trainer. As this dinner meeting was being arranged by Shantini, I had no idea whom were I meeting with. It came to a surprise to see Pui See and her sister, Wyn Cy (whom I know pretty well) at the dinner table. Well, we were all from the same gym before (talking abt how small the world is huh…
…). We had good time discussing in great length on the content of show. This is a good team and I want to be part of it. Let’s hope for the best.
p/s - Ten years back, I used to write Program Proposals for TV and managed to sell them to Production Houses. It’s great to know that I’m back to it now (well, not really though … glad that Shantini is doing it now). I was so much into Backpacking last time, so much so that my proposals were focused solely on that; from Cheap Honeymoon Holidays to Local Backpacking Programs. I’ve also been cheated by some middle men while selling these ideas ….. oh well, ces’t la vie.
Lab Series Skincare for Men Makeover

Arfian, who told us he had very little time for grooming, said by taking part in the Lab Series For Men contest he was hoping for a change to his everyday appearance.
“I have worked really hard for the past five years, both outdoors and indoors. I am in dire need of a makeover since I don’t have the time to do it myself, and I doubt I ever will. All my free time is currently dedicated to my family, work, competitions and business. My hair has turned white from swimming due to the chemicals in the pool and saltwater from the sea, and I almost never use a brush for my hair anymore, resorting to running my fingers through my hair most of the time!
Arfian Yusof, 35, is an engineer and personal trainer. He’s also a proud husband and father and an endurance athlete to boost. Intending to keep things basic and simple when it comes to his appearance, Arfian says he finds shorts, tees, slippers and a cap the best for him.
“I need this makeover badly, because I know I am much better looking than I am now!” he said in his contest form. (kihkihkih)
And that was the winning entry that brought Arfian Yusof to the makeover session.
“The session was very relaxing and therapeutic, especially since I knew I was in good hands. I specifically enjoyed the facial treatment. That was my very first experience,” Arfian said of his experience.
Saying sayonara to one’s moustache can do wonders for image transformation. Arfian emerged with blemish-free skin, clean shaven and sporting a totally fresh and new look.
Arfian went home with his new look and goodies provided by the organisers.

behind the scene – Awani Pagi

Yesterday, I was invited again by Astro Awani for my 4th show, but this time around as a Fitness Chef, my very first too (my other apperances were as Fitness Trainer). But mannn, it wasn’t easy to cook and talk at the same time.
I brought along the whole kitchen lot with me to the studio – bowls, knive, chopping boards, ingredients etc all neatly kept in the box. I pushed off from home at 7.30am as I need to be there by 9am – only to know that the entire surrounding roads/highways were jammed up. I made few attempts to try different routes but almost impossible to even get my car to move an inch. Thanks to the rain for the crazy traffic. It was already 8.30am and I was nowhere close. I decided to take the LRT at Sri Petaling instead and hurriedly got myself until Plaza Rakyat station – the closest ever station to Astro Awani’s studio located in Bursa Malaysia building. Unfortunately, it was too close for a cab to ferry me there ….
I arrived at the studio, not only soaked wet but just had enough time to lay the ingredients and kitchen utensils, did a very brief touch-up and off we went live on-air. Darn! With all the rushings and with too many things to do, I think my performance wasn’t that great. However, I was happy that I managed to show viewers how to make two of my favourite dishes; Prawn Mango salad (where both the hosts, Azean and Dang Suria cleaned up the plates well…hehheh) and White Egg Bruschetta, an italian finger food using my version of healthy ‘mayonnaise’, white eggs and corn.

That was one good experience and definitely a good learning curve for me. I even landed a sale on my Fitness Kitchen’s Healthy Lifestyle Program after the show. I also managed to get another client for my Personal Training package, from a presentation done at KLCC on later part of yesterday. Alhamdullilah.

I blogged about the behind-the-scene of this interview here. Well, those who missed the issue, here’s the content of the article taken from Berita Harian’s Ikon section, dated August 22, 2009. I will try to come-up with the English version if time permits.
Adat berpuasa, tubuh yang sebelum ini aktif dan cergas bertukar lesu kerana menahan lapar dan dahaga. Jika sebelum ini cukup masa, perut diisi – senario sepanjang bulan ini tentunya berbeza.
Tiada lagi rutin makan pagi, tengah hari dan petang. Melepasi waktu sahur, sekurang-kurangnya 13 jam perut tidak menjamah makanan hinggalahtiba waktu berbuka.
Pada bulan puasa, diet pemakanan berubah ketara. Pengambilan makanan menjadi lebih berat pada waktu awal pagi dan malam, manakala selebihnyaperut dibiar kosong. Perubahan ini tentunya berbeza bagi setiap orang.Ada yang terganggu emosi, letih dan kurang bertenaga. Antara punca keadaan ini mungkin kandungan gula yang rendah atau tekanan darah rendahketika berpuasa.
Dalam tempoh berlapar ini, tenaga masih diperlukan untuk melakukanaktiviti harian. Andai minda dan fizikal tidak cergas, masalah kelesuanpasti mengganggu kehidupan anda.
Sempena ketibaan Ramadan, XY – Tanya Pakar minggu ini mendekati pakar kecergasan serta chef makanan kesihatan untuk berkongsi tip kekal cergas sepanjang hari.
“Tidak seharusnya ketika berpuasa, aktiviti harian dan cara bekerja berubah hanya kerana kita berasa letih dan lesu”.
“Sepatutnya, kita masih boleh cergas andai arif soal pemakanan yang membolehkan perut dan badan menghasilkan tenaga sepanjang hari,” kata Perunding Kecergasan dan Chef Makanan Kesihatan Corporate Athletes, Arfian Yusof.
Arfian berkata, amat penting untuk kita mengetahui kandungan makanan.Ini bagi memastikan tubuh kekal bertenaga biarpun pada realitinya, minda menahan lapar.
Beliau berkata, menu untuk bersahur tidak terhad kepada nasi semata-mata. Sebaliknya, seseorang itu masih boleh mempelbagaikan makanan seperti roti, manisan dan buah-buahan.
Selain makanan, minuman memainkan peranan penting kerana tubuh badan masih memerlukan air lebih daripada tiga liter sehari untuk kekal sihat.
“Sebaiknya, kita hendaklah bersahur bagi mengelak perut kosong hinggalewat petang. Pengambilan makanan dan menu sampingan adalah penting untuk menghasilkan tenaga dan nutrien dalam badan,” katanya.
Arfian juga menggalakkan aktiviti bersenam diteruskan sepanjang bulan puasa. Bagi beliau, puasa bukan alasan tidak bersukan kerana amalan inimampu mengekalkan kecergasan badan serta menjamin minda cerdas.
Ditanya amalan diet pada bulan puasa, Arfian menegaskan, amalan itu tidak wajar jika dilakukan terlalu ekstrem sepanjang Ramadan. Ini kerana, katanya, tubuh memerlukan pemakanan seimbang dan berkhasiat sepanjang masa.
Selain memberi tip pemakanan seimbang, Arfian berkongsi senaman ringkas yang boleh dilakukan di pejabat apabila badan berasa letih dan mengantuk.
Bagaimana tubuh kita mampu menahan lapar sepanjang hari pada bulan puasa?
Walaupun kita tidak menjamah makanan dan minuman selama lebih 13 jam sehari, mekanisma tubuh kita mampu bertahan sepanjang tempoh itu. Adalah penting untuk kita makan ketika bersahur iaitu makanan yang mengandungi segala yang diperlukan untuk tenaga badan.
Mengapakah tubuh kita lesu dan letih ketika berpuasa?
Faktor lemah, pening, letih dan tumpuan fikiran kurang baik berpunca daripada kandungan gula dalam darah yang rendah. Elak mengambil terlalu banyak gula iaitu karbohidrat yang diproses terutama pada waktu sahur. Ini akan menyebabkan badan menghasilkan terlalu banyak insulin sehingga glukosa darah menurun.
Apakah menu terbaik ketika bersahur?
Selain nasi, pastikan pengambilan makanan yang berprotein seperti ikan,daging, bijirin dan sayur-sayuran yang seimbang untuk menjamin tenaga berkekalan.
Makanlah karbohidrat kompleks dan jenis lambat hadam iaitu bijirin seperti barli, gandum, oat, semolina, kekacang, dal, tepung gandum penuh dan beras perang ketika bersahur. Selain itu, hadkan pengambilan makanan serta minuman bergula.
Apa agaknya menu sesuai pada waktu berbuka?
Umat Islam di Malaysia cenderung menikmati sajian agak berat dan manis ketika berbuka puasa. Untuk fasa pertama Ramadan, pastikan anda menikmati makanan dalam kuantiti yang sepatutnya. Elak kuantiti keterlaluan untuk menjaga perut kosong.
Elakkan juga makanan yang mengandungi glukos tinggi selain makanan terlalu pedas. Sewaktu berbuka, seeloknya dimulakan dengan memakan buah kurma dan air panas.
Bagaimana pula kuantiti makanan yang sesuai diambil ketika berbukapuasa?
Seperti yang saya katakan tadi, usah keterlaluan dalam pengambilan makanan ketika berbuka puasa. Seeloknya, mulakan dengan manisan seperti kurma dan buah-buahan serta minuman sebelum menunaikan solat maghrib.
Biar rehat seketika barulah menjamu menu lebih berat. Jika kita mengambil nasi, pastikan sukatannya dalam skop yang seharusnya selain hidangan lain seperti daging, ikan dan sayur-sayuran diambil dalamkuantiti sepatutnya.
Apakah kita digalak bersenam sepanjang tempoh berpuasa?
Tiada sebab untuk kita menghentikan aktiviti bersenam. Namun, usahlah keterlaluan seperti melakukan rejim latihan yang berat. Ini kerana tenaga pada badan akan lebih cepat hilang serta mengeluarkan banyak peluh.
Waktu ideal untuk melakukan senaman?
Senaman boleh dilakukan dalam tempoh sebelum berbuka atau selepas berbuka. Bagi senaman sebelum berbuka, seeloknya dilakukan sejam sebelum waktu berbuka puasa.
Selain itu, pastikan senaman tidak dilakukan secara keterlaluan kerana tubuh ketika itu lesu. Bagi pilihan kedua, senaman dilakukan sebaik selesai solat terawih. Ini dianggap waktu terbaik kerana glukos pada makanan sudah diserap dalam badan.
Apa pula kesannya andai kita tidak mengambil makanan ketika waktu sahur?
Tidak dinafikan, ramai antara kita tidak bersahur kerana tidak sanggup berjaga malam. Tetapi ada sebab mengapa bersahur bagus untuk memastikan tubuh kekal bertenaga sepanjang hari.
Tidak bermakna menikmati makanan yang banyak boleh menjamin seseorang tidak lapar. Sehubungan itu, amat penting untuk kita mengambil pemakanan seimbang dan kandungan yang diperlukan tubuh.
Orang bujang lazimnya malas memasak dan menyediakan menu untuk bersahur. Mungkin ada alternatif yang boleh anda cadangkan sebagai pengganti nasi?
Idea terbaik ialah bijirin yang tinggi protein dan khasiat. Selain itu, roti tinggi serat dan mentega kacang juga menjadi alternatif sajian ringkas untuk jejaka bujang.
Mereka juga boleh mengambil buah-buahan kering seperti aprikot dan kurma yang mampu memberi sumber vitamin dan tenaga berpanjangan. Bagi minuman pula, sebaiknya minumlah susu.
Apa minuman sesuai ketika berbuka?
Elak mengambil minuman berais ketika berbuka puasa. Pada waktu itu, tubuh kita lesu dan harus dimulakan dengan air suam dan panas. Minuman seperti susu adalah baik untuk memulihkan semula tenaga yang hilang.
Tip Petua Kesihatan Ramadan
Elak:

Senaman ringkas di pejabat sepanjang Ramadan TIDAK perlu rutin senaman berat, sebaliknya anda boleh melakukan regangan ringkas di tempat duduk. Ini bagi memastikan badan tidak lesu dan mengantuk ketika berpuasa.
Ikuti empat kaedah ringkas senaman yang boleh diamalkan sepanjang tempoh berpuasa di pejabat.

the morning show

Earlier this week, Azean, the lovely host of Astro Awani’s Temujanji invited me to appear in its morning breakfast show, Awani Pagi, to talk about Fitness in Ramadhan. Deep down, I knew that the slot was yesterday. But when I checked my PDA a night before, the appointment obviously didn’t appear. Instead, the Awani slot appeared on 24th September i.e. two days after raya. I sensed something went wrong. Why do I want to talk about Fitness in Ramadhan right after raya?
I tried to call them up but to no avail. That morning, I rushed to the studio located in Bursa Malaysia, only to find out that my slot was right on! Darn, I showed up 10mins before the show, got myself touched-up very briefly and made a dash for the studio.
That was my first time appearing in the live morning show. My previous appearances were in WW, also another program by Astro Awani.
We had great time chatting about how to stay active during the fasting month, what to eat for sahur & iftar, and how to train before & after iftar. The hosts; Azean, Dangsuria and Fazrul did a wonderful job in keeping the discussion alive. They were very comical and professional.
I’m happy that it went well.
Behind the Scene – Makeover

I was one of the lucky winners for The Star’s (under the Clove section) LabSeries Makeover competition. Last Tuesday, I took a day off and spent the entire day pampering myself for a makeover at Pavilion KL. I had a great time. An Interview – behind the scene

Earlier this week, I got a call from Fairuz, a reporter from Berita Harian, for an interview for his upcoming article. Since I was so tied up with work, he was kind enough to conduct the interview at my workplace. He wanted me to wear a sports attire, unfortunately I only had my business attire on. I got rid of the tie of course. Here are some of the behind-the-scene photos, taken by my colleague, FY.

Photoshoot : Behind the scene

Past weekend, Corporate Athletes team did a photoshoot session for its ‘Tee Charity Promo’ in Hulu Langat, Selangor. I chose the location due to its not-too-spoilt natural surrounding. As blogged previously, Corporate Athletes is selling away its t-shirts for a good cause – 100% of its sale will go to charity. This will be explained in detailed in one of the blogposts later.
I am very grateful that I had the support by a dear friend of mine, who is also one of the leading male models in Malaysia, Azlan, and another very close friend of mine, Halim, the IT head of one of the leading newspaper publishers. Halim also helped me out to set-up the very first Corporate Athletes’ website. They are truly professionals.
